Given the rapid pace of technology change and growing threats around the world, the US Army is fundamentally changing its approach to modernization and acquisition with the newly formed 4-star Army Futures Command (AFC).  AFC has the charter to accelerate the way the Army innovates and acquires new capabilities, weapons, equipment, and systems through aggressive innovation and closer engagement with the private sector.  AFC is focusing on six modernization priorities: long-range precision fires, next-generation combat vehicle, future vertical lift, network, air and missile defense, and Soldier lethality -- all of which have been allocated $30 billion over the next five years.
